As marketers, we want our audience’s attention, and so for years, we relentlessly focus our efforts on acquiring it.
But in markets where there is so much competition to capture the attention of people who are in tough spots and already inundated with useless marketing noise, why do we continue to talk amongst ourselves about scaling even more of these random acts of marketing - and at the cost of our customer’s experience?
As much as we preach about putting the customer first, we don’t practice it. We subject people to noisy ads, over-used marketing phrases, ridiculous acronyms, buzzwords, useless swag, bribes for meetings, overpromises, and underdelivering.
Why do we choose to listen to and conform to what everyone except for what our audience says?
Audience comes first. This must be our mandate as marketers.
We need to shift our focus from random and trivial acts of marketing based on subjective conversations and get comfortable talking to our audience so we can truly understand their pain and help them make their life easier.
